Negative on news reporting
Usually not by choice, I watch the local TV news occasionally. I am not one to bury my head in the sand but I have a real hard time listening to the same dreary stories all the time. Every life is precious but there is violence, greed, corruption going on every single moment of every day. So what is a good balance given there are so many bad things that can be reported and good things too? I really don′t think it is healthy for anyone to be bombarded by bad news all the time and I for one would like to watch the news without feeling terrible about the world all the time. Yes there are a lot of bad things going on but I am a big believer that most people are inheriently good. It would be nice for the news to reflect that.
I have to believe that a well researched study would show that people subjected to constant bad news are negativity affected in personal outlook and health. How can this be good for society? I have heard the argument that the news is a reflection of what people want to see but I just don′t buy it. Sure sensationalism and drama are appealing to some (and even addictive) but so are feel good stories and news of hope and triumph.
I know there are some specialized news reporting publications out focused on specific types of news (even good news) out their, but what I want to see is a major network step up and put a news show on the air at prime times that works with the premise that there is as much or more good news in the world as bad and trys to bring the right balance of both. Weather, sports and news not totally skewed toward negativity (what a concept). It is of course a tightrope to walk the line of reporting with a balanced perspective and not turning the news into happyland. I would welcome the attempt to do so because perhaps unwittingly we have gone the other way and the filter seems to be if its bad we need to report it.
