Jaded Sports Fan here!
I was born and raised on sports and I am still a fan. I wait in anticipation for the upcoming season for nearly all sports to start. But once the season is halfway over I become depressed and not because I become bored, it’s because the seasons are way too long. Common sense would say playing baseball into October and beyond for example is just wrong. But you stop and realize the quagmire professional sports is in. Huge contracts that are paid off in longer seasons and protracted playoffs. Is this more entertaining? Not to me it isn’t. I know teams cannot come close to giving 100% each game with such a long schedule and certainly careers are shortened. Worst yet attrition becomes more of a factor to success then talent and teamwork. Where does it end? Unfortunately I don’t think it does. It’s a vicious circle of greed that tarnishes the games we love whether we know it or not. Of course going to a game at your favorite ‘plug in corporate name here′ stadium costs a fortune and is no longer a cheap family entertainment. But when you decide to pay the price and see a game live, you certainly don’t want to watch 2 teams that are coming off back to back games, in the midst of their 7th road game on the other side of the country. Doesn’t make for the best games. I still have a great respect for the talent professional athletes have and the hard work that got them where they are. Kids still grow up living the dream of being the star in the championship game of the World! I hope kids always have those dreams. I just hope for the few that turn those dreams into reality aren’t as disappointed as I am in what professional sports has become.
